A mainmast is the central mast of a ship
It is the largest mast and its sails are responsible for the core propulsion of the vessel. It is also integral to the overall stability and structural integrity of the ship. The mainmast traditionally housed the crow’s nest, the highest vantage point, from which a crew member would be the first to spot land, other ships, or potential dangers. Modern ships still use a mast for light signals, beacons and communications.
